The Aotea Glass Waste Project focuses on moving past recycling to actually reducing the glass waste we produce on Aotea.
In the Tīkapa Moana Hauraki Gulf Islands Waste Plan we made a commitment to minimising the amount of packaging coming to the island and this is part of that solution.
In 2016/2017, there was 134 tonnes of glass waste produced from use on the island which creates significant environmental impact and financial cost to our community to transport it back to Auckland.
Aotea Brewing, The Rocks Bottle Shop and Auckland Council have worked together to make a dent in this glass waste. We have established a beer refillery at The Rocks (with another opening at the brewery in October 2019) and we are going old school by bringing back the flagon as an alternative to single-use glass beer bottles.
